![]() ![]() Recent leaps forward in chess engine strength were algorithm improvements, and there is still so much potential for improvement in that respect. There really can't be much doubt that it is the future. This is literally the first research publication on the topic (afaik). Wide application of DNNs didn't take off until the 2000s. Which to me is great news as we finally see computers playing a more human form of chess, with great positional understanding of the game, instead of just relying on superior tactics like you get with a fast search and simplistic evaluation function. There can be no doubt that this is the future of top level computer chess. On the other hand, the NN+MCTS approach is still brand new and it has already caught up to, and very likely surpassed, decades of research on A/B engines. Yes, SF has improved since then, but what makes you think that A0 has not improved MORE? Sure, here we still see A0 with some unfair advantages: additional hardware (TPU) and larger binary size encoding more knowledge. A0 learned by playing against itself in 9 hours. SF uses an evaluation function crafted by human experts and carefully tuned for over ten years. This was over the course of a few months. Then it beat SF8 with TCEC setup, tablebases and tournament tc. Please continue to give us your feedback and suggestions on how we can help make /r/chess better for everyone.įirst A0 beat a poorly configured SF8 with unfair tc.
